editing

Editing is a broad term that breaks down into four levels from the most extensive to the least: developmental editing,  line editing, copy editing,  and proofreading.

I offer line editing, copyediting, proofreading, and writing services. An explanation of each editing level,and its accompanying rate, can be found in the table below.

If you would like to work with me, I will perform a sample edit of your work.  This will tell me where you are at in the writing process and confirm what level of edit you need. It will also give you insight into my editing style and ability.

I edit books (non-fiction, fiction, memoir, and children’s), business writing, technical writing, website content, and academic writing.

Tiers & Rates

Line editing takes an intensive look at your project line by line, analyzing each sentence and paragraph in light of the entire body of work. I review your work, fixing any mechanical errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation, but it involves much more than that. Style, continuity, clarity, consistency, cohesiveness, and correctness are carefully considered while prioritizing  your meaning, style, and voice.  As your editor, I weigh what might need to be reworded, tightened, or eliminated. Conversely, I may ask for more specifics or an expanded explanation for a of portion of the text.  Fact checking is also part of my work.

Lighter than line editing, copy editing is mainly concerned with the mechanics of grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. However,  I will make changes where language is unclear and query any inconsistencies. Copyediting should only be performed after a line edit has been completed.

$ 0.025 per word

Proofreading is the last stage of editing before a book is deemed print-ready and should only be performed after all other editing stages are completed.  This is the last stop to triple-check for any spelling, capitalization, or grammar errors. This is also the time when a book is scoured and scrutinized, making sure there is consistency across the board in numerous areas: formatting, spacing, fonts, numbering, table of contents, front matter, back matter, quotations, bibliography, and index.
